Several other suggestions for boosting the ratio of healthy to non-healthy qualities in our FAVORITE cookie:
- Although some prefer margarine or shortening for various reasons, butter though higher in calories, is more natural, and I use it instead.
-I have also substituted peanut butter for some of the shortening- We really like it at our house.
-A little whole grain flour or oatmeal in place of part of the flour.
- In addition to applesauce as a substitute for part or all of the fat, other fruits such as bananas will work. The texture will be different though, and you may want to experiment to see what you prefer. The fruit gives the cookies a lighter, more cake like texture.
-Carob chips substituted for chocolate (not in MY cookies though!)
To keep a cookie anything like the familliar one we all love, the ingredients need to be somewhat similar, and only make minor adjustments to the recipe.
Remember, this is a treat, so if your regular diet is healthy, this little indulgence is a healthy diversion.
Good luck!
try half of the choclate chips in you're recipe
Would not waste my time. Why bother, be sinful, indulge. All the butter, real choco chips, nuts, vanilla, ummmmm.
Use semi-sweet chocolate chips, not milk chocolate. Replace every cup of oil with a half cup of applesauce. You can use egg whites instead of eggs, but the hemoglobin in the yolk is good for you, even if that is where the fat is.
Use a lot of nonstick spray on the cookie sheet to compensate for the lack of fat in the batter.
Hmm...I don't know if they'll be healthy, but these certianly will have much fewer calories and cholesterol.
Use earth balance shortening instead of butter or other margarines (butter is full of cholesterol, margarine has hydrogenated oil. this has neither), use Ener G brand egg replacer instead of eggs (no fat, few cals), use some sort of artificial sweetener instead of sugar (ie-splenda), and finally use grain sweetened chocolate chips to again cut back on the cholesterol.
